EMDR Therapy

Trying to conceive, undergoing fertility treatment, experiencing pregnancy loss, or birth trauma can be emotionally destabilizing in ways that are hard to put into words. Many people find that even after time has passed, their bodies still react—through anxiety, dread, intrusive thoughts, or emotional shutdown.

EMDR therapy is one approach we use at Fertility Psychotherapy Group to help clients process reproductive trauma and regain a sense of internal steadiness.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy originally developed to treat trauma. Rather than relying primarily on talking through events in detail, EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they are no longer stored as “unfinished” or overwhelming.

When applied thoughtfully, EMDR can help reduce the emotional intensity connected to past reproductive experiences—such as infertility treatment, pregnancy loss, medical trauma, or birth complications—without requiring repeated retelling of painful memories.

How EMDR Can Help with Infertility and Reproductive Trauma

Fertility journeys often involve repeated disappointments, invasive medical procedures, loss of control, and chronic uncertainty. Over time, these experiences can accumulate in the nervous system, even when someone is “functioning” on the outside.

EMDR therapy may help if you notice:

  • Persistent anxiety around fertility treatment or pregnancy
  • Panic or dread before medical appointments
  • Intrusive memories of loss, procedures, or diagnoses
  • Emotional numbness or disconnection
  • Difficulty trusting your body or the future
  • Feeling “stuck” despite insight and effort

Our work is not about forcing positivity or rushing healing. It’s about helping your nervous system metabolize what it has been carrying.
Pregnancy loss—whether early or later—can be deeply traumatic, particularly when it is minimized by others or followed by pressure to “move on.” Many clients are surprised by how vivid memories, physical sensations, or sudden emotional waves persist long after the loss.

EMDR can help process:

  • Miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Stillbirth or traumatic delivery
  • IVF loss or failed embryo transfers
  • Medical emergencies during pregnancy
  • The moment of receiving devastating news

This work is paced carefully and collaboratively. You remain in control throughout the process.

EMDR for Pregnancy Loss, Miscarriage, & Birth Trauma

We do not use EMDR as a standalone technique or quick fix.

At Fertility Psychotherapy Group, EMDR is integrated into a broader therapeutic relationship that prioritizes:

  • Emotional safety and consent
  • Careful preparation and stabilization
  • Respect for ambivalence, grief, and complexity
  • Attention to relational and developmental context

Some clients benefit from EMDR early in therapy; others choose to incorporate it later. We will never push this modality if it doesn’t feel appropriate for you.
EMDR can be effective, but it is not the right approach for everyone at every moment. You may be a good fit if:

You feel emotionally overwhelmed by past fertility-related experiences
Talking alone hasn’t shifted certain reactions
You want to work with trauma without being re-immersed in it
You value an evidence-based but relational approach

If you’re unsure, that uncertainty itself is worth discussing.
